KNUBLEY BRASS CANNON BARREL BLUNDERBUSS WITH FOLDING BAYONET. SN NSN. (ca. 1793) Cal. .650 Bore diameter. 1.185 at muzzle. This unusual and very high quality blunderbuss is engraved “- Knubley – Charring – Cross – London -” on octagonal rear portion of nicely swamped and flared barrel, with unusual under-slung folding spring-loaded bayonet, held in place by long latch retained by catch in an extension of trigger guard, actuated by spring-loaded rear “trigger”. Rear portion of bbl is also deeply stamped with London gun makers and view proofs, with nicely turned wedding band transition to round portion of bbl. Breech plug is iron. Flint lock with serpentine cock has bridled frizzen with large roller on spring. Rear sliding safety bolt engages at half cock. Lockplate has rebated tail, and is engraved “London”. There is light floral engraving on most metal parts with triangle and bead borders. All stock furniture is brass; buttplate having wide long tang. There is an oval escutcheon at top of wrist, and beaded ramrod pipes also mounted on left side of forepiece of stock, and contain oak ramrod with brass head and steel worm tail. Stock appears to be of elm with nice sweep to butt, and deeply fluted comb. Square wrist checkering has nicely ogee carved mullering. There is a traditional raised scallop shell carving at rear of tang. CONDITION: Very good. Brass furniture has been polished, but has mellowed back to a gold patina. Iron parts were cleaned a long time ago, and are silver to brown. Stock retains most of what appears to be its original finish with numerous marks and compressions from handling and use. Lock and frizzen are crisp. Safety works, but is a bit loose. Blackmore lists a John Knubley at Charring Cross, 1786-1794, Gunmaker to Prince of Wales, Duke of Clarence, and Prince Edward. His will was probated in 1795. 4-40204 MGM66 (4,000-6,000)
