J. SYLVESTER BRASS BARRELED BLUNDERBUSS MUSKETOON. SN NSN. Cal. Approx. 1.075 Bore diameter. 1.580 (4 Bore) at muzzle. 16-1/2″ Long barrel has London proofs and gunmakers mark “IS” in lozenge surmounted by fleur-de-lis on upper left portion of octagonal breech, with rounded raised boss, cut with V-notch sight. Octagon transitions to 16 sides, then to round with 2 simple turned wedding bands. Round portion of bbl is slightly swamped, and then blends into flare at muzzle. Lock with large serpentine cock, bridled frizzen, and friction spring with teardrop termination, is engraved with line borders, feather transition to tail and “J Sylvester” under pan. All furniture is of brass, nicely shaped, but with very little decoration, except trigger guard, which has acorn finial. There is some file decoration on side plate. Oak ramrod with steel worm is held by beaded brass pipe and thimble. Dark European walnut stock is unadorned. This intimidating big bore is all business. CONDITION: Good. Brass has been polished over the years, but has mellowed nicely, with a mix of gold to black patina. Iron parts are mostly brown with some scattered pitting. Wood shows an old oil finish, possibly original, with minor marks and dings. Lock and frizzen are crisp. 4-40626 MGM77 (3,500-4,500)
