I. G. DACHTINE FLINTLOCK JAEGER-TYPE RIFLE. SN NSN. Cal. .610 Bore diameter. 7-Groove rifling. 24″ Nicely swamped octagonal iron barrel has two gold cartouches at breech end, one with initials “I G D” (?), and the other an eagle. Rear sight is one standing, one folding leaf in decoratively filed base. German silver front bead is dovetailed through bbl. Flint lock, bridled frizzen, and friction spring have fancy filed termination. Lock plate is engraved “I. G. Dachtine A” around pan, and “Lachapelle” on front portion under frizzen spring. Nicely filed serpentine cock has line border engraving. Stock furniture is German silver, with fancy filed outline engraved with acanthus motifs. Buttplate has unusual stand of arms type engraving, featuring an eagle, musket, violin, and caduceus. Sideplate has a more standard stand of arms. Crest plate at wrist has central shield with double headed Austrian eagle flanked by lions, edelweiss, and surmounted by a crown. Trigger plate houses double set trigger. Trigger guard is of carved wood with inlet German silver strengthening band. European walnut stock has right-hand cheek rest, and is very finely carved with relief acanthus around bbl tang and thimble. There is a sliding wooden patchbox cover on toe, secured by a toggle lock. Full length stock terminates in German silver muzzle cap. Ramrod pipe and thimble house steel ramrod with German silver tip. There is a sling loop toward muzzle, and sling eye in front of patchbox. CONDITION: Very good. All iron parts are smooth silver with little pitting evident. German silver is nicely toned. Patchbox cover is a well done replacement. Stock is fine, as is carving. Bore is bright, but somewhat dark in grooves. Lock sounds crisp, but will not cock. Set trigger appears to work. 4-40200 MGM73 (3,000-5,000)
