VERY FINE DE SAINTE VERSAILLES FLINTLOCK FOWLER. SN NSN. (ca. 1775) Cal. .650. De Sainte was gunmaker to the king, and father-in-law of famed gunmaker Nicholas Boutet. This gun has 32″ barrel with the breech portion being octagonal, transitioning through 5 banded wedding ring to 16 sides which continue to muzzle. Breech end of bbl has numerous gold washed poincons; Three large roses, six fleur-di-lis, a large square cockerel, and a crowned legend “Le Clerc a Paris”. There are other gold washed engraved devices especially at transition. Open flowing scroll surrounds inset silver front bead. Gold washed no. “6” is also on top flat, and this number also appears on trigger guard tang. Long lockplate has chamfered sides and rebated tail with transition nicely sculpted. Unbridled frizzen is nicely filed and engraved, and frizzen spring has modified teardrop finial. Lockplate is engraved with well cut scrolled acanthus, outlining “De Sainte a Versailles” under pan. Tall serpentine cock has scroll engraving, that doesn’t quite match remainder of gun. Full relief scrolled acanthus steel sideplate mounts two screws to hold lock. Intricately relief filed trigger guard has acanthus finials with hunting horn and quiver of arrows engraved on bow. As mentioned before “6” is engraved on tang. Very nicely streaked and figured European walnut stock extends to muzzle and attaches to bbl with 3 broad side nails. Octagonal ramrod pipes have beaded ends. Maple ramrod has steel tip. Stock measures 13-5/8″ over broad steel buttplate with scroll engraved short tang. Velvet covered gold braid bordered cheek pad is on comb. Broad square checkering has punched dots at center of each diamond. A very finely relief carved shell surrounds top tang. CONDITION: Fine. All metal appears to have been originally intended to be bright polished, and shows that this has been maintained over the years, but is slightly toned, and has areas darkening from cleaned oxidation. Stock appears to retain most of its original finish, as maintained over the years. Bore is fine, shiny but frosted. Lock and frizzen are crisp. Cock appears to be old, but not original to this gun, as chamfering and engraving does not quite match. Ramrod is a well done replacement. 4-40199 MGM124 (5,000-8,000)
