EARLY I. WILHELM FLINTLOCK FOWLER. SN NSN. Cal..630. 47″ Octagonal tapering to round barrel has top flat of octagon continuing and tapering toward muzzle as full length rib. Sides of octagon are fluted. Top flat is engraved “I. Wilhelm. Eich. a. Wefling”. Tang is integral with bbl. Banana-shaped lockplate has heavily beaded border, and tapered tail, unbridled friction frizzen has relief teardrop on front, frizzen spring terminates in teardrop with acanthus finial. Serpentine cock has beaded border, matching lockplate. “I. Wilhelm” is engraved on lockplate under pan. Relief filed and engraved sideplate has many piercings depicting mythological beasts with large teeth, with acanthus finials. Trigger guard is also relief filed and engraved, with grotesque masks toward finial and on bow. Rear tang terminates in acanthus burst. Trigger ends in curled finial, and has pierced and decoratively filed blade. Wide steel buttplate has beaded edges, and 7-1/2″ long top tang. Burl-grained fruitwood stock extends to muzzle, and has raised carved surrounds for all furniture, except buttplate and crest plate at wrist. Forestock mounts to bbl with 4 pins. Three decoratively turned pipes, and matching tail pipe hold hickory ramrod. CONDITION: Fine. All metal parts are cleaned to silver brown. Stock retains a large amount of old finish, and is quite pleasing. Lock and frizzen are crisp. Bore is good. 4-40194 MGM133 (6,500-7,500)
