FINE EDWARDS & ROBERTS GEORGIAN MAHOGANY CARD TABLE. Mid 19th century. The rectangular hinged top with outset corners and gadrooned edge above the conforming frieze fitted with a central drawer carved with leaf tips. The apron scalloped and leaf tip carved raised on cabriole legs with acanthus-carved knees and carved, scrolled returns terminated in boldly carved ball and talon feet. The drawer branded on the front edge “EDWARDS & ROBERTS”. Among the foremost London firms of marchand-merciers, and being both dealers and manufacturers during the second half of the 19th century, Edward & Roberts was founded in 1845 and rapidly expanded. By 1854 it was trading as ‘Edwards and Roberts, 21 Wardour Street, Antique and Modern Cabinet Makers and importers of Ancient Furniture’. The firm produced furniture of modern design, as well as copies of 18th and early 19th century French and English pieces, also restoring and dealing in genuine examples of this kind. By 1892 Edwards and Roberts had taken additional premises in more than a dozen buildings in Wardour Street and the surrounding neighborhood, continuing to trade until the end of the century.
