BAUMAN WHEELOCK RIFLE.

BAUMAN WHEELOCK RIFLE. SN NSN. Cal..560 Groove diameter, 7-Rounded groove. 35-1/2″ swamped octagon barrel is inlaid with silver “Int Bauman in Minchen”. A circular gold poincon is inset toward breech depicting standing figure with bow and marked “Antoni Baumaan”. Bbl is fitted with one standing, two folding leaf pierced and engraved rear sight, and small dovetailed front bead with surrounding silver inlay. Lock has internal wheel, sliding pan cover, and flat-faced dog to help contain sparks. Plate and lock are etched and engraved, with scroll and hunting scene; pair of dogs chasing stag with two horsemen in pursuit. Sideplate has decoratively filed outline, and is scroll engraved with coat-of-arms at center. Trigger plate mounts set triggers. There is a push-button safety on left side of stock, in front of sideplate, that blocks sear, until pressed. Trigger guard has three spurs, one at rear quite long, and has filed and engraved acanthus finials. Figured European walnut stock has sliding patchbox on right, with engraved steel tip and toe. Stock has fine raised acanthus and floral carving with incised shell on right. There is a makers mark on bottom. Stock extends to muzzle with engraved steel tip. Three faceted and beaded pipes hold horn tipped hickory ramrod. Tailpipe has engraved and shaped finial. CONDITION: Very good. Metal parts are brownish gray, showing cleaning, and with engraving on lock somewhat washed. Wood is fine. 4-40198 MGM154 (5,000-8,000)
