JOHN BIVENS CONTEMPORARY FLINTLOCK. SN NSN. Cal. .410 Groove diameter. 6-Groove rifling. 44″ Swamped octagon barrel has file decorated U-notch rear sight, and German silver blade front, dovetailed through top flat. Makers silver cartouche “I.B” is on rear of upper left flat. Touch hole is platinum. “1” is engraved on breech plug tang. Nicely filed lock with flat-sided serpentine cock and octagonal bridled pan is nicely chamfered with decoration toward tail. High quality brass furniture has broad chamfers with simple filed in decoration. Rectangular hinged patchbox has button release at heel of buttplate and is border engraved. Base has nicely filed silver tack decoration and is engraved in acanthus motif. Finely figured tiger maple stock has dark finish, right hand cheekpiece, nicely carved moldings and beads along ramrod channel and toe line, with very finely carved relief acanthus, in the best manner. Shaped silver crest plate at grip is engraved “S D”. Stock extends to muzzle with brass cap. Hickory ramrod is held in place by four octagonal pipes with broad beaded ends. Tailpipe is nicely filed with square finial. Sling bows at forestock and on trigger guard hold good quality leather sling. CONDITION: Nearly as new. Metal parts are nicely browned, and silvering very slightly on sharp edges. Brass is toned nicely. Wood is beginning to show brighter highlights on sharp edges. A very well made rifle by one of the acknowledged greats of the 20th century. 4-40628 MGM156 (4,000-6,000)
