LOT OF EARLY AMERICAN POSSIBLES BAG, POWDER HORN & SKINNING KNIFE.

LOT OF EARLY AMERICAN POSSIBLES BAG, POWDER HORN & SKINNING KNIFE. This early set probably dates to the late 1700s or early 1800s and consists of a wonderful leather bag 8-1/2″ wide x about 7″ high, bean shaped i.e. a narrow opening that swells out to a larger diameter. Bag is made of well tanned leather, probably split cow hide with a hair-on deer skin flap covering with a fine fringe edge on the bottom. It has a 2″ wide heavier leather shoulder strap from which is suspended its orig tinned powder measure with soldered flat seam and soldered cap, in its own sleeve suspended from a replacement thong. Sewn high on the other side is the sheath & keeper for a small bone handled patch knife. Handle appears to be made from deer bone. Also suspended from the front on replacement thongs is a flat greenish cow horn powder horn, slightly curved, about 8-1/2″ long x 1-1/2″ thick with oval brass or copper end cap and spout that is missing its plug. Accompanying is a period homemade skinning knife with wooden handle secured with two copper harness rivets. Knife has a 5″ clip point blade and is 9-1/8″ overall and is in its orig crude leather sheath. Sheath is made of two pieces of heavy leather fastened together with ten brass harness rivets. CONDITION: Bag is poor to fair with the flap showing moderate to heavy wear, mostly broken along the top edge with only about 1″ of attaching hide remaining. Fringe is dry & delicate but reasonably intact. Strap has about a 1″ tear at the apex and has been glue attached on one side of the bag. Horn is fine with the metal ends a very black copper/brass patina. Patch knife is poor, heavily pitted with eroded bone handle. Powder measure is fine. Skinning knife shows heavy wear with a very worn handle. Sheath is very hard & dry retaining very little orig finish 4-40668 JR99999 (800-1,200)
