ELIJAH ROSS FULL STOCK PERCUSSION SQUIRREL RIFLE. SN NSN. Cal. .340 Groove diameter. 6-Grooves. 40″ Octagon barrel is stamped “E. Ross. Zanesville Ohio” on top flat. Fine notch rear sight with file decoration is dovetailed through top flat, as is German silver blade front sight. Muzzle is engraved with full sunburst. Bbl is fitted with drum and nipple type breech, with faucet-type priming/ clean-out plug. Nipple retains nicely shaped flash cup. Front action percussion lock with flat-sided serpentine hammer, has some punched engraving, and is marked “Elijha Ross – 1845”. Elijah Ross, Zanesville, Ohio, is listed in the census of 1820 as employing two hands, and being equipped with rifling machine with guides, and two forges with bellows. He is also listed in the 1850 census. Trigger plate mounts double set triggers. Spurred trigger guard is brass. Buttplate is German silver, with long flat brass return. Geometrically shaped patchbox is mostly brass but with inset German silver devices. Dark red-stained stock appears to be maple, and has Kentucky type cheekpiece with German silver transition. There is a scrolled German silver inlay on left side toward butt. Full length forestock has brass tip and mounts to bbl with 3 pins through oval German silver escutcheons. Thin, spiral stained, hickory ramrod mounts through two brass pipes with turned ends, and German silver tailpipe with squared finial. PROVENANCE: In patchbox a slip of paper with typed notation “Kentuck squirrel rifle, made for William Schultz, about 1850, by E. Ross, gunsmith, of Zanesville, First gun ever shot by B. V. H. Schultz – resting rifle on a rail fence and shooting on a mark, under the guidance of his grandfather, William Schultz. This was in the year 1872.” CONDITION: Very fine as found, has obviously been well cared for over years, and never been over cleaned. Bore is excellent, bright and shiny with sharp rifling.
