NELSON LEWIS (TROY, NY) PERCUSSION DOUBLE RIFLE/ SHOTGUN. SN NSN. Cal. .356 Groove diameter rifle/ .634 Bore diameter shotgun. 29″ Rifle barrel/ Damascus steel shotgun barrel has wide concave rib stamped “N. Lewis Maker Troy” and is gold washed. (Gardner in SMALL ARMS MAKERS states that Nelson Lewis was established in Troy NY in 1843. In 1860 he employed four hands. He died in 1888.) Rib is fitted with long semi-buckhorn rear sight, with elevation slide, and decoratively filed pine tree finial. German silver blade front sight is dovetailed through decoratively filed raised ramp with dots punched to aid in windage adjustment. Hook breeches are decoratively filed. Case hardened breech iron has raised rib extension and mounts lolly-pop type rear sight. Back action locks have tall decoratively filed serpentine hammers. German silver furniture consists of looped back trigger guard with stylized pineapple finial, and crescent buttplate. Return has shaped finial. Crenulated patchbox is on right side of American walnut stock, which features right hand cheekpiece, inlaid with German silver herd of buck. Half stop forepiece mounts to bbl with file decorated side nail through oval German silver escutcheons with circular extensions. Rosewood ramrod with brass tulip head, and brass tail with worm under cap, mounts to bbl with two plain pipes. German silver tailpipe has stylized pineapple finial. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain considerable amount of their original brown. Some case color is evident on breech iron and locks. German silver shows some cleaning and stains. Wood shows most of what may be its original varnish finish with some oil rubbed in. Locks are a bit soft. Ramrod appears to be original.
