MOLL PERCUSSION SWIVEL BREECH KENTUCKY DOUBLE RIFLE. SN NSN. Cal..483 Groove diameter. 8-Groove rifling. This was probably made by John Moll III, working in Allentown, PA after succeeding his father in 1824. He was active until 1876 in partnership with his brother, as John & William H. Moll. 36″ Over/ under octagonal barrels with brass side ribs and drum and nipple breeches, are stamped “Moll” on top flat of one bbl. Semi-buckhorn file decorated rear sights and long blade German silver front sights are dovetailed through top flats of bbls. Swivel breech is released by pulling trigger guard to rear. Back action percussion lock with wide rounded serpentine hammer is engraved with large open acanthus. “Warranted” is stamped at rear. Steel sideplate is same shape as lockplate, but is unadorned. Broadly chamfered brass trigger guard has spur forming semi-pistol grip. Chamfered tang crescent buttplate has button patchbox release. Hinged rectangular patchbox is scalloped and outlined with line border engraving. Vestigial right hand cheekpiece is scored in three graduated lines with oval German silver decoration. There is a teardrop-shaped crest plate at grip, engraved “LG”. Buttstock is of nicely fiddle-figured maple. Hickory ramrod with steel worm, mounts through 3 plain pipes on one brass rib. CONDITION: Very good. Iron has mostly dark brown patina. Brass is a mellow gold. Stock retains most of its old finish. Lock is relatively crisp. Bores are fine, lightly frosted.
