HENRY DERINGER POCKET SIZED PERCUSSION PISTOL. SN NONE. Cal. 50. Fine Henry Deringer pistol with 2″ ovoid shaped bbl, tiny German silver front sight and fixed rear sight in top tang. Breech plug & lockplate are marked “DERINGER PHILADELPHIA” and left top flat of breech plug has “P” proof. Top tang, lockplate, hammer & trigger guard are very nicely engraved in foliate arabesque patterns. Top edge of hammer is engraved in a dolphin motif. Mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with checkered wrist and bird head butt with German silver furniture. Trigger guard has a pineapple finial and tapered trigger bow with long lower tang. Top of wrist has an empty shield shaped thumb plate and a teardrop inlay in the butt. Bbl is secured with a sgl wedge through dog bone shaped escutcheons. These little pistols were extremely popular in their day with citizens from all walks of life, including ladies who carried them as muff pistols or in their purses. They were especially popular with gamblers as they were easily concealed and quite deadly at short range. Accompanied by an oak leaf repoussed brass 3-cavity charger with spring loaded powder spout in top and ball & cap cavities in bottom. Also accompanied by a nutcracker bullet mold with sprue cutter marked “60” on one arm. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl retains about 30% orig brown pattern with balance worn & cleaned to gray patina. Lockplate & hammer are mostly a gray patina. Stock has a hairline by the lockplate screw escutcheon, otherwise is sound showing moderate wear on left side panel with light nicks & scratches elsewhere and retains most of its orig varnish. Mechanics are crisp, strong sharp bore. Flask is very fine retaining 88-90% orig finish. Mold is fine. 4-36831-1 JR136 (2,000-3,000)
