MEISSEN FIGURAL GROUP. Mid 19th to first quarter 20th century, German. Satirical representation of a semi-naked male figure on back of donkey, the beast being fed clusters of grapes by a maiden partially reclining on the ground while a young child pulls on the tail of the animal. Two male figures with grapevine wreaths, somewhat intoxicated. On gilt decorated scrolling plinth. With crossed swords in underglaze blue. Number “2724” etched in plinth above impressed “111”. SIZE: 8-1/2″ h x 8-1/2″ l. PROVENANCE: From a fine New Jersey home. CONDITION: With old, now discolored, repairs to maiden’s left arm and right foot, to rider’s right hand, otherwise with small chips and flecks in crowns and basket.
