FINE SOUTHERN AGENT MARKED LARGE HENRY DERINGER PERCUSSION PISTOL. SN NONE. Cal. About 52. Fine large Henry Deringer pistol with 4-3/8″ ovoid shaped bbl, tiny German silver front sight and fixed rear sight in top tang. Breech plug and lock plate are marked “DERINGER / PHILADELPHIA” and has the “P” proof on top left flat of breech plug. Top flat of bbl is marked “MAND FOR / W.H. CALHOUN / AGENT / NASHVILLE. TENN.” Top tang, lockplate, hammer & trigger guard are nicely engraved in foliate arabesque patterns with dolphin motif on top edge of hammer. Mounted in a nicely figured 1-pc walnut stock with German silver furniture and nicely checkered grip with bird head butt. Top of wrist has an empty shield thumb plate and there is a teardrop shaped inlay in the butt. Trigger guard has a nicely decorated finial with tapered trigger bow and short tang. Bottom of bbl has an iron rail and its orig brass tipped tapered wood ramrod with iron jag in the concealed end. Altogether a fine rare Southern agent marked Deringer that likely saw service for the Confederacy during the Civil War. PROVENANCE: David Crocker Estate Collection. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl is mostly a cleaned metal patina with fine pitting, mostly on right side. Lockplate & hammer are dark metal patina. Stock is sound with light nicks & scratches and retains most of its orig varnish. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with fine pitting. 4-36831 JR135 (4,000-7,000)
