RARE SPRINGFIELD 1ST ALLIN CONVERSION RIFLE MUSKET. SN NSN. Cal. 58 RF. Usual configuration with 37-3/4″ rnd bbl, square base front sight/bayonet lug and 2-position musket leaf rear sight. Lockplate has usual Model 1861 markings with the date “1862”. Mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with three flat bands that have spring keepers and a tulip head ramrod. Left side panel has the outline of the “ESA” (Erskine S. Allin) cartouche and traces of a smaller rectangular cartouche. Middle band has a sling loop with corresponding loop in trigger bow. Conversion was effected by milling away a portion of the chamber area of the bbl and attaching a hinged breech block with right side latch and a rack & pinion or “creeping” extractor on right side which extracts the cartridge and upon full retraction releases and is spring loaded to return to the starting point. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms only about 5,000 were made at Springfield Armory in 1865. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl retains 60-70% strong orig bright metal finish with scattered spots of brown patina. Breech block & latch are black oil case hardening. Latch spring is broken. Lockplate retains most of its orig case colors, fading & turning dark. Trigger guard & buttplate are mostly brown patina. Wood is sound with a few minor storage & handling marks and retains most of its fine orig oil finish with strong edges on side panels. Right side panel has an arsenal splice in the wood over the extractor area. Lock is crisp. Bright shiny bore at the muzzle. 4-40853 JR320 (2,500-3,500)
