ORIGINAL PACKING CRATE FOR CIVIL WAR COLT RIFLE MUSKETS. This may be the only orig packing crate for Colt special model muskets extant. This box appears complete with removable partitions such that if you happen to have 20 mint Colt rifle muskets you can pack them back in their orig crate, which measures 62-1/2″x15″x17-3/4″ (externally). Each side of the box is made from very wide, single boards of pine about 3/4″ thick. Box is put together with square nails and screws. There was a rope carrying handle on either end. Each end is stenciled. one end stenciling is all easily discernible, as can be seen in photos, and reads “20/1ST CLASS/20/RIFLE MUSKETS/COLT’S CAL 58/SERVICEABLE/AGH”. Opposite end of the box is similarly stenciled, however it is not as easy to read. This side appears to read “20 AGH/3/0/US MIL RIFLES/NO BAYTS COLT/MOD 63 CAL 58/…..T 1ST C…”. This box is in beautiful “as found” condition with much character to the uncleaned wood surfaces. SIZE: 62-1/2″x15″x17-3/4″ (externally). CONDITION: This box, overall, is very solid. So often Civil War era storage and shipping boxes have rotten areas from sitting on the ground. This box, apparently, has been well stored as the wood is dry and pieces well fit. Internally the movable partitions are move good and are functional. Each movable block either accepts a butt or a muzzle and ramrod end and alternate. Markings on either end of box are mostly discernible, as can be seen in photographs, though a few letters are unreadable. Removable top of box fits back well though lacking square nails that would have held it in place. Outside surfaces of box show numerous scrapes, scratches, dings, dents. One rope handle is intact, the other handle is broken off. 4-40671 JS16 (2,000-3,000)
