VERY RARE 1841 RIFLEMAN’S POUCH AND PEACE FLASK WITH ORIGINAL STRAPS. Wonderful rifleman’s pouch for the 1841 Mississippi rifle made of heavy belting leather, 7-1/4″ wide x about 5-3/4″ high with gussets around the circumference on three sides, sewn to a piece of heavy buff colored leather which divides the pouch into two pockets. It has a scalloped edge flap with slotted tab made to attach over a leather button which is missing. Rear of pouch has two attached iron roller D-rings to which is attached the orig buff colored leather split strap with orig keepers and brass hooks. Strap is split for about 11″ where it becomes solid for the shoulder strap and splits again on the other end for about 12″ and has identical keepers and brass hooks which are attached to triangle hangers on an orig Batty peace flask. Flask is brass bodied with wide brass collar marked “BATTY” and “1850” on top of collar. Flask has a 3-position spout with spring loaded plunger and has inspector initials around the collar. Flask is 9-3/4″ high including spout and is dbl sided with an early American eagle & shield surmounting a pair of clasping hands inside a sunburst which is inside a circle of stars, all of which surmount a trophy of arms & flags faced with a shield inscribed “US”. This was apparently an issue item to accompany the Model 1841 Mississippi rifle and is extremely rare today, especially in fine orig condition. CONDITION: Leather bag is intact except for the leather tab button which is missing. Stitching is intact & solid. Surface of leather is crackled but has been treated, however additional conservation is warranted. The flask is very fine, retaining about 80% strong orig finish with coppery colored patina where finish is worn. Brass collar & spout are in very dark patina. Shoulder strap is sound and completely intact with moderate to heavy soil & staining, also in need of conservation. A truly rare & exceptional set suitable for the most advanced collector or museum. 4-40461 JR188 (3,000-5,000)
