EXCEEDINGLY RARE AND IMPORTANT SPRINGFIELD “USM” PATTERN MODEL 1842 U.S. PERCUSSION MUSKET. SN NSN. Cal .69 smoothbore. This important pre-production 1842 Pattern Model has a high degree of finish on both external and internal parts.”USM” markings denoting UNITED STATES MODEL are found on the lock, hammer, side-plate, buttplate, trigger guard, and all three bbl bands. Internally, the lock is marked “USM” and has brilliant fire blue. All screws and small parts with the exception of the trigger guard screws are properly stamped with “M” marking. 42″ bbl marked “MODEL 1842” at top tang with “V/P” over eagle’s head on the right side. Lock is marked “SPRING/FIELD/1842” behind the hammer with American Eagle over “US” in front of hammer and “USM” on the toe of the lock. Walnut stock with comb is without any cartouche. Accompanied by a proper “US” marked socket bayonet. The 1842 was the standard arm of US infantry prior to 1855, many of these arms were still in use or in state arsenals at the beginning of the Civil War. It was the first regulation musket made in the percussion ignition system at the national armories with fully interchangeable parts and the last regulation smoothbore. Very few of these Pattern Models, produced as Ordnance samples, are known to exist. CONDITION: Very Fine. Bright finished bbl and lock have scattered very light surface oxidation. Sound stock has exceptionally fine finish and normal handling marks. The action has crisp mechanics. The bore is bright with only scattered light frosting. 4-40455 DS57 (10,000-20,000)
