RARE & UNUSUAL SYSTEM HAAKEN-PLOMDEUR BEGIAN COPY OF A WESSON & LEAVITT PERCUSSION REVOLVER. SN 8. Cal. 36. Extremely well made Belgian copy of the Wesson & Leavitt revolver with improvements. It has a 6-3/4″ oct bbl that has twelve lands & grooves in the bore, mushroom pin front sight and integral V-notch rear sight in the top strap. Top strap is inlaid in flat gold “SYSTEME HAAKEN-PLOMDEUR”. Built like the Wesson & Leavitt and later the Mass Arms revolvers with tip up bbl and no bottom frame. The cyl arbor is slotted for the bbl latch which hooks into a spring loaded tip, an improvement over the American revolvers. It has a small rounded frame with flat sides and attached trigger guard. Cyl, like the Wesson & Leavitt and Savage Arms has a convex front face with angled nipple recesses and flat rear face with cyl stop holes aligned with each nipple and another hole near the spindle hole which engages a pin on the rotating collar. It has a curved back action lock like the American versions with very highly finished internal parts. It has a long narrow steel back strap with integral butt strap that screw mounts at the top and is secured with a wood screw into the grip through the butt strap. Grip is wonderfully relief carved 1-pc walnut that is very nicely detailed in foliate arabesque & floral designs with a fine stippled background. Bottom panels on each side are carved in pine cone or snakeskin designs. Frame, lockplate, hammer & cyl are very nicely engraved in patterns that match the carving on the grips with foliate floral & arabesque patterns all intertwined, with a fine matted band around the rear edge of the cyl. SN is found on the bottom of the bbl at the frame, rear face of cyl & top flat of cyl spindle. Rear face of cyl is also is stamped “HP”. Bottom of bbl is stamped “HAAKEN-PLOMDEUR” in an arc just forward of the SN. Accompanied by a copy of the June 1962 The Gun Report which contains a 3-page article by Graham Burnside on this exact pistol. CONDITION: Very fine. Bbl & top strap retain about 90% glossy orig blue with edge wear and a few scattered spots of light pitting. Frame retains case color on the very top with the balance faded to silver. Lockplate & hammer are also faded to silver. Cyl is a clean gray metal patina. Back strap also is a gray metal patina. Grip is sound, dark & oil stained with orig finish on bottom edges. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore. 4-39892 JR350 (3,000-5,000)
