FINE PAIR OF BAUCHERON – PIRMET PERCUSSION TARGET PISTOLS WITH ORIGINAL CASE AND ACCESSORIES. SN NSN. (ca. 1835-1840) Cal. .518 Groove diameter. Multi-groove rifling. 9″ Twist steel swamped octagonal barrels are inlaid in gold with “1” or “2” and “Baucheron – Pirmet, a Paris” on top flats. Small barleycorn front beads are dovetailed through top flats. Case hardened patent breeches have nicely filed fences, with gold bands inlaid fore and aft. Finely floral engraved breech irons have filed in V-notch rear sights. Small ovoid back action “island” locks have broad slightly rounded serpentine hammers. Lockplates have “Baucheron Pirmet a Paris” inlaid in gold in oval logos, and are engraved with large open scrolled acanthus, hammers with smaller acanthus and floral motifs. All screw heads are in the form of high relief engraved flowers. Trigger plates have unusual basket of fruit type finial, and spurred trigger guards have engraving which matches hammer and breech iron. Triggers are set. Cupid’s bow sideplates have floral highlights. Figured European walnut stocks terminate in large flared pistol grips with relief carved floral and shell motif surround and scalloped steel inset domed caps. 26 LPI scallop pattern borderless checkering wraps around outside of grip. Bbls are affixed to forepieces with steel side nails, and have no escutcheons. Forend tips are relief carved with acanthus, and there are no provisions for ramrods. Brass bound, spectacular, burl elm veneered case has oval escutcheon on lid, and key lock closure. Interior of lid is lined in what was once blue velvet with blue gold-embossed morocco leather band. Bottom of case has two lidded compartments with turned ivory vase-shaped knobs. Recesses for guns, and all accessories are french fitted with recesses lined in velvet matching interior of lid. Top surfaces are of purple gold-embossed morocco. Case contains an array of original accessories including two rosewood loading and cleaning rods, one of which has graduated powder measure in end, rosewood loading mallet, barrel-shaped rosewood nipple case, rosewood-handled nipple wrench and turnscrew, reeded copper-body brass-capped powder measure with spring plunger cut-off, octagonal steel oil bottle, and steel double ball mold with automatic sprue cutter. There is a fine file decorated main spring vise in one of the lidded compartments. CONDITION: Fine. Bbls retain a good amount of their original twist finish, but have darkened considerably. Metal parts retain a considerable amount of their original case hardened finish. Case hardening on grip caps is quite good. Stocks retain most of their original finish, but with many minor marks and scrapes, and some areas of wear. Bores are excellent. Locks are crisp, and only cock when triggers are set. Case is fine with most of its original exterior finish, and a good deal of original lacquer is on brass. Brass lunate thumb detent is missing. Interior cloth is good with two areas in lid that are bleached where they had contact with breech areas of bbls. Leather is very fine. One of the ivory knobs has been repaired. Accessories are very fine. Rosewood of nipple wrench/ turnscrew does not match other accessories. 4-40842 MGM132 (5,000-8,000)
