INTERESTING J. KNUBLEY SILVER MOUNTED AND WIRE INLAID FLINTLOCK PISTOL. SN NSN. Cal. .595 Bore diameter. 13″ Barrel with octagonal breech section which transitions to 16-sides, then with wedding band to round, is engraved “London” on top flat. Top left flat is stamped with Birmingham proofs. Lock with rebated tail and flat serpentine hammer has rounded pan, bridled frizzen, and roller spring with teardrop finial. “Knubley” is engraved on lockplate under pan, and all lock parts are line border engraved. All furniture is silver and is hallmarked for Birmingham 1805, made by John Fothergill. Double beaded trigger guard has acorn finial. Flared grip cap extends into grip, and pierced sideplate mounts two screws. Recurring theme on this gun is a crescent moon, which is cast into grip cap and sideplate, with engraved additions on either side of grip cap, on tail of lockplate, breech of bbl, and on bow of trigger guard. This crescent moon is surrounded by stars in all areas that it is engraved. European walnut stock is also profusely inlaid with brass and silver wire, some of which repeats the crescent moon theme, with white metal irregular dots throughout. The significance of all this is unknown, but there must be some story to tell. Stock extends to muzzle with silver cap. Light wood ramrod has turned silver tip, and is held in place by beaded single pipe, and matching tailpipe with spear finial. CONDITION: Good. Steel parts have been polished bright and are toned back to a pleasing silver. Silver mounts are very fine, showing little wear, and are nicely toned. Stocks show some wear with numerous bits of silver and brass wire lifting and missing, but not objectionably so. Lock is slightly mushy. Frizzen is crisp. Bore is brown. 4-40638 MGM165 (2,500-3,500)
