JOSEPH STOCKL OVER-UNDER FLINTLOCK PISTOL. SN NSN. Cal. .560 Bore diameter. Gardner in SMALL ARMS MAKERS lists two Stockl’s in Neustadt, – Johan 1697-1700, and another, first name unknown, in 1787 … this gun probably made by the latter, Joseph. 8-1/2″ Octagonal to round with multi-banded wedding ring transition barrels are engraved “Ioseph Stockl a Neustat” on top flat. Long tail rounded locks with rounded serpentine cocks, unbridled frizzens, and friction springs with fleur de lis finials have fluted edges. Right lockplate is engraved “Ioseph Stockl”, and left “A Neustat”. Left lock is set low in stock with pan set deeply into plate with tall frizzen to fire bottom bbl. Interesting locks have back action springs. Brass trigger guard has squared back. Pistol grip cap has bell shaped finial. Nicely shaped crest plate at top of grip is engraved with “P”. Stock is what appears to be elm, and has inset wire decoration around locks with relief carved acanthus around breech plug tang. Stock extends to muzzle with heavy brass cap. Horn tipped ramrod is held by brass pipes. Tailpipe has nicely filed finial. CONDITION: Good. Metal has smooth gray patina. Brass is mellow gold to brown. Wood shows considerable wear, but is sound. Trigger guard tang is short with unfilled area in stock. Locks and frizzens are crisp. 4-40972 MGM178 (5,000-7,000)
