JOHNSON MODEL 1836 FLINTLOCK PISTOL. SN NSN. Cal. 54. Fine Johnson flintlock with “1841” dated lockplate, 8-1/2″ rnd bbl, fixed sights and iron furniture on the 1-pc walnut stock. Bbl has a captive rammer. Stock has a full length iron back strap with rnd butt cap & iron trigger guard with 1-pc bbl band & sideplate. Left side panel has crisp “JCB” (Joseph C. Bragg) and “WAT” (William A. Thornton) cartouches with small inspector initials over the various parts. Although this pistol was produced in large quantities in the period 1836-1844, they are rarely found with high orig finish and in orig configuration. Most were converted to percussion in the 1840s and most saw heavy military & militia use, even into the Civil War. CONDITION: Very fine. Overall retains lightly cleaned orig bright metal finish with patches of old dried oil. Stock has a small crack on the left side by the front lockplate screw, otherwise wood is sound with minor storage & handling nicks & scratches and retains about all of its orig oil finish with raised grain look everywhere except the grip which shows light hand wear. Mechanics are crisp, strong bore with some shine and light pitting. Altogether a fine Johnson pistol. 4-40648 JR325 (4,000-6,000)
