REMINGTON NEW MODEL NAVY CARTRIDGE CONVERSION REVOLVER. Cal. 38 CF & RF. SN 43031. Nickel finish, 7-1/2” oct bbl with standard three line marking, pinched front sight, casehardened hammer, 2-pc smooth walnut grips. This revolver is an experimental model modifying the improved Navy Model. It was made from scratch as a cartridge gun. It has two separate firing pins that were depressed simultaneously as the hammer dropped in firing. The top firing pin would strike the rim of the chambered cartridge and the lower firing pin would strike the center of the cartridge. The upper firing pin is missing in the revolver. As a result of this design, the revolver could fire either center or rim fire cartridges in the chamber under the hammer. The revolver would fire any combination in cylinder. Circa 1878 after the 38 CF cartridge was introduced. This is the only one known to exist. It never went into production, perhaps because it would ruin a center fire cartridge for reloading with a dent in the rim. Reloading was becoming very popular at this place in time. CONDITION: Very good. Retains 90% of current nickel, which covers some of the pitting on frame & cyl. There is new flaking and light pitting on bbl & loading assembly. 30% silver remains on triggerguard with numerous dents & scratches. Grips have been refinished. Bore is good with light pitting. Action is fine. 4-59322 JH75 (2,250-2,500)
