PAIR PHILADELPHIA FEDERAL SHIELD-BACK MAHOGANY SIDE CHAIRS. Circa 1810. Each with molded shield back headed by a carved pineapple, the ears with floral rosettes, centering a graceful pierced splat interwoven and with scrolled terminals, joined to the trapezoidal slip seat with serpentine front rail, raised on tapered molded square legs, the rear legs raked, joined by recessed box stretcher. Literature: For an example with similar elements, see American Furniture, the Federal Period by Charles F. Montgomery, plate 85, pgs. 138-139. SIZE: 38″ h. of back x 18″ h. of seat.
