SCARCE SIMEON NORTH MODEL 1808 NAVY FLINTLOCK PISTOL. SN NONE. Cal. 64. Fine War of 1812 pistol with 10-1/8″ rnd smoothbore bbl, no provisions for sights with beveled edge, flat lockplate with rounded tail, brass pan, bridled frizzen and a diamond shaped tail on frizzen spring. Hammer is reinforced style with heart shaped cut-out. Lockplate is marked with a small spread-winged eagle over “U. STATES” in front of hammer and “S. NORTH BERLIN, CON.” vertically behind the hammer. Mounted in a pin-secured 1-pc walnut stock with brass furniture consisting of a single guide with hickory ramrod, smooth brass trigger guard and round butt strap with long flat side plate which has an iron belt hook. Back strap is smooth iron. Only about 3,000 of these scarce pistols were produced in the period 1808-1810 with most seeing hard service during the War of 1812 and few surviving today. CONDITION: Very good. Iron parts are a cleaned metal patina with strong markings and a partially visible eagle on the lockplate. Stock has a spliced patch on right side and some minor fill with a repaired crack on the left side, otherwise is sound and retains a smooth restored finish. Hammer is not solid in the half or full cock notches. Strong bore with scattered pitting. 4-40816 JR328 (5,000-7,000)
