IMPORTANT PAIR PHILADELPHIA FEDERAL MAHOGANY SHIELD-BACK SIDE CHAIRS. Circa 1790-1800. Each shield form back with arched molded crest rail continuing to molded stiles, centering five splayed splats carved with tied leaf sheafs anchored by a fluted fan with carved flowerhead. The overupholstered saddle seat with bowed rail is raised on tapered square frontal legs with string inlay and banded cuffs, the rear legs backswept, joined by a recessed box stretcher. The side rails are not mortised through the rear legs. SIZE: Each 39-1/2″ h. of back. Each 17-1/2″ h. of seat. PROVENANCE: Purported by the family to be two of the original set commissioned by John Brown (1736-1803), Providence, Rhode Island, and given to his daughter Sarah at the time of her marriage to Charles Frederick Herreschoff (b 12/27/1763). By descent to their son C. F. Herreschoff II (b. 7/26/1809) who married Julia Ann Lewis, to their son C. F. Herreschoff III (b. 2/26/1839) who, by his wife Alice Cook (daughter of Isaac Almy (b. 5/04/1813) and Alice Bateman Almy (b. 10/09/1809). Alice, wife of C.F Herreschoff III had no children but her brother, Darwin Almy (b. 2/28/1848) had a daughter, Clara M. Almy who married Harold Sutton. Clara Almy Sutton purchased the chairs from Alice Almy Herrechoff. She then left the chairs to Clara J. Almy who was the granddaughter of Darwin who in turn left the chairs to his nephew, Walter G. Cook. CONDITION: Both retain old cleaned and polished surfaces. Losses to cuffs. Small splice proper right rear leg at foot. Small stress crack on one chair at crest rail. Possible center stretcher replacement on one chair. Overall very fine condition. 9-93560 (2,000-3,000)
