SCARCE SIMEON NORTH MODEL 1808 NAVY FLINTLOCK PISTOL. SN NSN. Cal. 64 Smoothbore. Fine War of 1812 Flintlock pistol with 10-1/8″ rnd bbl with no provision of sights. It has a beveled edged flat lockplate about 5-3/4″ long and slightly curved with rounded tail. Hammer is reinforced type with a replacement top jaw screw. It has brass pan and refaced, bridled frizzen. Frizzen spring has a diamond shaped tail. Lockplate is marked “U. STATES.” forward of the hammer and “S. NORTH / BERLIN / CON.” vertically behind the hammer. Pistol is in a 1-pc walnut stock with brass furniture consisting of two brass guides, trigger guard, rnd butt cap and a flat sideplate with tail which is missing its belt hook. Belt hook screw is present. Stock is purported to be a period of use replacement. It appears that there is a splice at the tip of the forestock that begins at about 1″ and extends diagonally to about 2″. Only about 3,000 of these pistols were produced in the period 1808-1810 with most seeing hard service during the War of 1812 with few surviving today. CONDITION: Fine, as noted above. Bbl & lockplate are a dark gray/brown patina with pitting toward the muzzle and light pitting around the flashhole. Lockplate & hammer are also lightly pitted. Stock, with its aforementioned repair at the tip shows evidence of formerly broken springs with chips around the lockplate and overall retains a fine antique finish. Brass was polished a long time ago and has now regained a medium brass patina. Ramrod is a replacement. Mechanics are fine, moderately pitted bore. 4-40906 JR323 (4,000-5,000)
