FRENCH MODEL 1733/63 FLINTLOCK ARMY PISTOL. Cal. 69. Fine French military pistol with 9-1/4″ rnd bbl, without provisions for a sight. Top left area of the breech end of the bbl is marked with a large crown / “CB” / “65”. The tang is engraved “M. 1763”. Lockplate is about 5-1/8″ long, slightly curved with beveled edges and a medium length teat at the tail. Bridled frizzen has a curled toe and a fleur-de-lis shaped tail on frizzen spring. Hammer is reinforced with beveled edges & flat side and lockplate is marked “Manuf le Royale / a St. Etienne”. Inside the lockplate is stamped “PIERRE / DUTRUEI” and the reinforced area by the pan is stamped “MC” with four notches on the front edge. Bottom right of the bbl, under the lock is stamped “DEN / LION.” with a half moon. Mounted in a 1-pc walnut stock with brass furniture consisting of a dbl-strap front band with steel button head ramrod, a plain trigger guard with convex, J-shaped sideplate and a birdhead shaped grip cap with short tang. Left side panel is crudely engraved or branded in large letters “CHPY”. According to consignor this pistol was produced by makers M. Jourdan & A. Nicholas and the inspector marks are for the Council of Safety 1776-1778. CONDITION: Fine. Bbl & tang retain a smooth light brown patina with scattered spots of surface discoloration. Lockplate & hammer are a mottled gray metal patina. Brass retains a medium mustard patina with light nicks & scratches. Stock is sound with nicks & dings showing heavy wear and retains a fine hand worn patina. Mechanics are fine, strong bore with light pitting. 4-40208 JR347 (3,000-4,000)
