UNIT IDENTIFIED LARGE BRITISH HORSE PISTOL. SN NONE. Cal. 58. Fine British holster pistol with 12-1/8″ tapered rnd bbl, no provision for sights with top of bbl marked “3D D G DS” (3rd Dragoon Guards). There are also two large British proofs over the chamber area. Pistol has a slightly convex lockplate, about 5-1/4″ long, slightly curved with a short teat on the tail. Lockplate is marked with the crown & cipher of King George III along with a British broad arrow & crown in front of the hammer and “VERNON / 1760” vertically behind the hammer, with an engraved shield shaped border. Area in front of the hammer & below the pan also have a matching border. Pistol has a rounded steel pan with bridled frizzen and fleur-de-lis tail on the frizzen spring. It has a large gooseneck hammer with matching engraved border and a number “2” stamped on the shank. Mounted in a 1-pc stock with pinned bbl and brass furniture consisting of brass guide and nosepipe containing a brass tip wood ramrod, plain brass trigger guard with long plain foliate shaped finial and long tang with oval buttplate that has long langets. Side plate is rounded with long tail that has a ball finial. Thumbplate is acorn shaped and engraved “D / 11”. Stock has a raised panel around the top tang and there are proofs & numbers in the wood to the right of the thumbplate and a cartouche on the left side panel. A brief Google search disclosed that the 3rd Dragoon Guards is an old British Unit which served in various wars throughout Europe with some distinction. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. The iron parts are a smooth dark brown patina with legible markings and proofs, sharp on the lockplate. Stock is sound showing moderate to heavy wear and retains most of a restored finish. Brass has a medium mustard patina. Mechanics are crisp, strong bore with visible machine marks and light pitting. 4-40817 JR330 (6,000-10,000)
