LIONEL ERIE SALESMAN SAMPLE PRE-PRODUCTION BOXCAR. Possibly one of a kind, this early Lionel 6454 series boxcar from the late 1940s is accompanied by a standard production model for comparison. The brown Erie freight car, numbered 81000 on both sides, with the Erie diamond and data on both sides. This car is in very good plus condition with a little bit of rust on one door rail. This car is being used as a sample for the pre-production model. It is thought that this car was a factory sample with experimental lettering. This car has the same number 81000 but the lettering appears to be hand stamped or hand-done. The paint is a cream color rather than white. One side of car shows Erie diamond and the information done in darker paint so it is hardly visible. The other side does have the Erie diamond and information. All the information appears to be hand-lettered. This car was acquired originally from a man that worked for the Lionel Company as a salesman. It is believed that it was presented to the production team, but since the lettering was less visible, they decided to go with the cream lettering instead. CONDITION: Sample car – overall condition is very good, some minor chips on end panel on each end of car, small chip out of catwalk, overall paint is very good subject to previous description. 1-7952 (1,800-2,800) Auction: Advertising, Toy & Doll - Fall 2007 Please Note: All prices include the hammer price plus the buyer’s premium, which is paid by the buyer as part of the purchase price. The prices noted here after the auction are considered unofficial and do not become official until after the 46th day. |
