FRENCH MID-18TH CENTURY DRAGOON FLINTLOCK MUSKET WITH BAYONET. SN NONE. Cal. 69. Fine Revolutionary War period French dragoon musket with 40-1/2″ rnd bbl, 2-strap bronze front band and bronze rear band with 2-strap iron middle band. Middle band has a sling wire with corresponding sling wire on trigger bow. It has an iron trigger plate with two finger grooves and brass trigger bow with J-shaped convex brass sideplate. Lockplate is about 5-3/4″ long, slightly curved with flat beveled edge front and rounded tail with short teat. It has a brass pan with bridled frizzen and bulbous frizzen spring tail with short teat. Lockplate markings are nearly obliterated. Mounted in an uncheckered straight grain walnut stock with dished comb and smooth steel musket buttplate. Right side of heel has a red lettered museum number. Accompanied by a triangular socket bayonet with 16″ blade and a spread winged eagle / “B” proof on the shank. Blade is marked with a matching red museum number. CONDITION: Fine to very fine. Bbl, lockplate, hammer & middle band are bright, clean metal possibly cleaned a long time ago. Bronze parts are a dark brass patina. Stock has a couple of grain checks by the lower tang with normal nicks & scratches and retains most of its fine varnish finish with feather raised grain look. Mechanics are crisp, strong bore with good shine and moderate pitting. Bayonet retains strong orig bright finish with moderate surface spotting. 4-40635 JR375 (1,500-2,500)
