BUCKS VOLUNTEERS SHORT LAND PATTERN TOWER MUSKET. SN NSN. Cal. .76. 39″ Bbl, with bayonet lug 2-1/4″ behind muzzle, is pinned to stock. Rear of bbl is stamped with Birmingham proofs, and indecipherable barrel makers mark. “28” is engraved in script. Typical Tower lock with rounded serpentine cock, bridled frizzen, and spring with lobed finial is engraved with “G R” surmounted by sovereign crown in front of cock, and “Tower” behind. Crowned arrowhead acceptance mark is under pan. Musket has Short Land pattern brass furniture. “Bucks Vols.” and “H” is engraved on trigger guard bow. Deeply fluted walnut stock has oval raised carved decoration behind top tang, as well as drop points. Makers mark “I.R” is stamped on left cheek behind sideplate. The 85th (Bucks Volunteers) Regiment of Foot was a British Army line infantry regiment. During the Childers Reforms it was united with the 53rd (Shropshire) Regiment of Foot to form the King’s Shropshire Light Infantry. The 85th was raised in 1793 by George Nugent, their Col., in Buckinghamshire for service during he French Revolutionary Wars. They first saw action in the Netherlands, before moving to the West Indies. In 1806 they returned to Britain and converted to a Light Infantry role, renaming as the 85th (Bucks Volunteers) Light Inf. Two years later they were serving under Wellington in the Peninsular campaign and fought at Fuentes de Onoro and Badajoz. In 1814 they were dispatched to America and saw action in the last phase of the War of 1812. In 1815 they received a royal association becoming the 85th (Bucks Volunteers) Duke of York’s Light Inf, and in 1821 the 85th (Bucks Volunteers) King’s Light Inf. CONDITION: Good. Metal is cleaned to silver, with brown freckled pitting on bbl. Lock is relatively bright. Stock is good with added oil. Brass furniture has a pleasing patina.
