MANN FLINTLOCK LONG FOWLER. SN NSN. Cal. Approx..850 Bore. 60″ Barrel with octagonal breech section transitioning to round with “wedding band” is stamped at breech with London gunmakers proofs and initials “I. G.” in serrated rectangle. (The only “IG” shown in Blackmore’s book GUNMAKERS OF LONDON is for Joseph Griffin – working dates of 1741-1784, showing initials in rectangular device but with edges altered.) 6-1/2″ Lock with bridled friction frizzen, bead terminated frizzen spring, and large serpentine cock has rebated tail with line engraving on plate, cock, and pan. Lockplate under pan is engraved “Mann”. (Gardner’s book SMALL ARMS MAKERS lists William Mann in Glasgow Scotland working from 1777-1780.) Double beaded trigger guard terminates in stylized fleur-de-lis or thistle finial. There is also a rather naive thistle engraved on trigger guard bow. Plain iron buttplate has long tang which is fastened by four screws. Shaped iron sideplate has recesses for both lock screws and is secured by an additional screw at rear. Lockplate is engraved in full capitols with unusual serifs “ROB. ROY McGREGOR” (The Rob Roy of Scottish fame had long given up the ghost by the time this firearm was made.) Horn tipped hickory ramrod is held by 3 iron pipes and thimble, and has iron worm at end. Full length stock mounts to bbl with 5 wedges, has nicely swept line to toe deeply fluted comb, and has 4 LPI squared checkering with center punch highlights. Area behind breech iron is relief carved with shell motif. CONDITION: Good. Bbl has brown patina and shows considerable wear from cleaning, etc. over the years. Bore is rather pitted. Lock and all furniture are brown patina. Stock is sound with a relatively recent coat of oil rubbed on, and shows considerable wear and use. Lock and frizzen are relatively crisp. A really neat old Scottish gun. 4-40211 MGM35 (4,000-7,000)
