EARLY AMERICAN BLANKET CHEST ON FRAME IN RED WASH. Last quarter of the 18th Century. The two-drawer blanket chest on frame possibly coastal Rhode Island or Connecticut shore. In two parts, the rectangular upper case with hinged top and applied molded edges, carved with three simulated thumb-molded graduated drawers over two additional graduated drawers and fitted to the lower frame with molded edge, scalloped sides and astral shaped apron raised on ring-turned cylindrical legs. SIZE: 52-1/2″ h x 36″ overall w; 33-1/2″ case w x 18″ overall d. PROVENANCE: Attached to the inside of the lid on the blanket chest is written “This chest of drawers was made about one hundred and ten years ago by Caleb Munson and presented to Amy Tyrrell afterward Johnson, as a gift for nursing her sister and his wife, Lucy, middle name Roberts last name Johnson during her confinement when Caleb Munson was born. It was left by Amy Tyrrel Johnson to her daughter Amy Johnson Gillette.-Sept 23rd 1895.” CONDITION: Pine blanket chest with chestnut secondary wood, now applied with a later red wash, the hardware and hinges replaced. Restoration to back of lid. Fully restored with pleasing color. 9-98786 (700-1,000)
