RARE SIX PIECE BIEDERMEIER MAHOGANY PARLOR SUITE. Mid 19th century, Finland. 1) Comprising an oval center table with hexagonal pedestal joined to three carved inverted fanciful dolphins on a tripartite base with incurved sides terminating in suppressed ball feet. 2) Four armchairs, each with rectangular back with flame mahogany veneers above scrolling returns flanked by stiles with rolled ears and floral rosettes. The cylindrical cannon barrel arms joined to the stiles with acanthus carved terminals on S-scrolled supports carved with scrolling leaf tips and floral rosettes centering trapezoidal upholstered seat cushions within a conforming frame. The rectangular legs with scrolled returns. 3) The two seat settee with shaped crestrail above a paneled back mounted with central carved floral roundel joined to C-scroll arm rests centering a rectangular upholstered seat cushion raised on rectangular tapering outswept legs. SIZE: Table: 28-1/2″ h x 48″ l x 33″ w. Armchairs: 35-1/2″ h x 24-3/4″ w. Settee: 41-1/2″ back h x 60″ l. PROVENANCE: Family Lore places the origins of the suite in St. Petersburg, a Finnish city, where they were acquired by the grandparents of the current owner, formally of Seinajoki, Finland by descent to the current owner. Note: A nearly identical example of an armchair is illustrated on the cover of Scandinavian Review, showing a photograph of a room in the Presidential residence in Helsinki, Finland. CONDITION: The pieces retain original surfaces. Table very good overall. Settee with old shrinkage cracks in arms, proper right arm in need of rejoining at upper scroll. Chairs, each with small areas of veneer loss, and with small repairs to returns, one chair with repaired ear and stile. Small veneer losses throughout. All pieces need professional repolishing.
