RARE CAST-IRON FIREBACK IN THREE PARTS. Circa 1889, Boston, Massachusetts. This fine cast-iron example stamped with the maker’s name “WELLINGTON & BURRAGE, BOSTON NO. 8 COPYRIGHTED 1889”. With a loose attribution to Elihu Vedder, whose works were commissioned by the same company and numbered in a similar manner at the same time period as this fireback. The central section cast with seven rows of allegorical panels interspersed with panels of floral filled urns, flanked by smaller sections each with an upper and lower diamond border cast with classical busts and half roundels. In addition to the small panel of floral urns are additional panels of lions rampant and cast dragon panels, similar to the Welsh national flag. SIZE: Central panel: 31″ h x 29-1/2″ w. End panels: 31″ h x 18″ w. CONDITION: Very good overall, with minimal and negligible rusting. No breaks or restorations noted. 9-27739 (2,000-3,000)
