SPANISH NEEDLEWORK “N_A SENORA DEL PILAR”. Circa 1851. Spain. Wrought on linen depicting a stylized altar with floral columns headed by bouquets joined by an arch of vinery and tasseled drapes centering a silk print of the figure of Jesus Christ beneath a stitched radiating sun. Beneath the altar is embroidered “N_A SENORA DEL PILAR/FOR PETRA RALDVA ANO 1851.” Which loosely translates to Our Lady of the Pillar which is the name given to the Blessed Virgin Mary for her claimed appearance in Spain. Her shrine is in the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar in Zaragoza, by the river Ebro. SIZE: sight 17-1/3″ x 13-3/8″ CONDITION: Housed in a later walnut frame and beneath glass, the linen with discoloration and light staining. A woven repair at 1 o’clock. Colors of embroidery retain clarity, somewhat soiled and faded. Good overall. 9-20316 (400-600)
