FINE SILK NEEDLEWORK PICTURE OF A “SAILOR’S FAREWELL”. First quarter 19th century American. Depicting a young couple; the male in sailor’s uniform and black hat and shoes, consoling a young woman in tears. In the background is a fully rigged ship at sea, while in the medium ground to the viewer’s right is seen the interior of a room with flax wheel, chair, and a recumbent cat. The hands and faces of the figures are hand painted on silk. The whole within an eglomise matte and housed in an ebonized gold gilt frame. SIZE: Sight 12-1/2″ x 9-3/4″. Frame 19″ x 15″. CONDITION: The silk work in very good condition retaining very color throughout. Some minor discolorations in background left side facing, some losses to proper left side of eglomise border. 9-99611 (1,000-1,800)
