FINE SMITH CIVIL WAR CARBINE. SN 3279. Cal. 50. American Machine Works made carbine with 21-1/2″ oct to rnd bbl, dovetail front sight base, missing its blade and a short carbine ladder rear sight. Left side of receiver is mounted with a sling bar & ring and is marked with the American Machine Works and Poultney & Trimble information. Mounted with nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with rnd forearm secured with a sgl band and straight stock with carbine buttplate. Left side of wrist has a crisp cartouche. Carbine is covered in a heavy covering of old dried oil which obscures much of the fine orig finish. CONDITION: Extremely fine. Bbl retains about 98% orig blue with a few scattered freckles of light surface rust. Receiver retains most of its orig factory case colors under a heavy coating of old dried oil. Spring latch bar on top retains about all of its bright fire blue. Wood is sound with a very few, very scattered light storage & handling nicks & scratches with a whiskered look. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore, probably unfired. 4-40993 JR356 (2,000-3,000)
