FINE MAYNARD MODEL 1863 CIVIL WAR SADDLE RING CARBINE. SN 20448. Cal. 50. Standard late model carbine with 20″ oct to rnd bbl, pinched blade front sight and 2-leaf 3-position carbine rear sight. Left side of frame has an attached sling bar & ring. Mounted with uncheckered, straight grain American walnut buttstock with two crisp cartouches on left wrist and has a squarish steel carbine buttplate. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms there were about 20,202 of these carbines produced in the period 1863-65. They were mostly all issued and used through the waning couple of years of the Civil War and a number of high profile cavalry units were armed with them including the 9th & 11th Indiana and the 11th Tennessee. Although this model was produced in fairly large numbers they are rarely encountered with a high state of orig finish. CONDITION: Very fine plus. Bbl retains about 99% strong orig blue. Receiver retains most of its orig case colors, strong & bright in sheltered areas, stronger & brighter on right side. Stock is sound with a few minor handling & storage nicks & scratches and one small gouge on the comb and overall retains most of its orig oil finish. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore, may be unfired. 4-40992 JR355 (2,000-3,000)
