TALBOT HUGHES (British, 1869-1942) “THE NEW DRESS”. Wonderful interior oil on canvas scene shows a woman admiring her new dress which she is seeing in the mirror on her for the first time. The dress has Oriental influence with colors of ivory, red and magenta. She is adorned with jewelry and appears ready for a formal night out. The vanity has a porcelain dresser set and upholstered chair sits under an edge of a window. Signed lower left. Wonderfully housed in a period gesso decorated wide frame with gilt liner and having an artist and title plaque. Back of stretcher has a paper indicating that this was the property of the “Marquess of Tweeddale”. SIZE: 22-1/2” x 16-3/4”. CONDITION: Very good. 9-73553 LG (5,000-7,000)
