REYNOLDS BEAL (American, 1866-1951) THE PATRIOT, 1935. Mixed media on paper circus scene shows a man atop a circus wagon holding a large American flag. A clown performs for the foreground viewers and several tents can be seen flying American flags. Signed lower left “Reynolds Beal 1935 Downs Bros. Circus, Gloucester, Mass.”. Housed in a fine carved & gilt double frame with wide linen matte and glass front. REFERENCE: Exhibition label on reverse from the 2005 Exhibition at the Cahoon Museum of American Art titled “Dusty Glory: The Circus in American Art”.
