REYNOLDS BEAL (American, 1866-1951) THE SALUTE, 1939. Mixed media on paper scene shows two large elephants flanking a man holding an American flag while others look on. Several tents are in the background, all flying American flags. One elephant sits raising its trunk in salute. Signed lower right, dated “1939” and inscribed “Downey Bros. Circus”. Housed in a fine gilt & carved wood double frame with linen matte & glass. REFERENCE: Exhibition label on reverse from the 2005 Exhibition at the Cahoon Museum of American Art titled “Dusty Glory: The Circus in American Art”.
