RARE 3RD MODEL BURNSIDE CIVIL WAR CARBINE. SN 2784. Cal. 54. Made similar to a 2nd Model with 21″ tapered rnd bbl, pinched blade front sight and 2-leaf 3 position rear sight. Carbine has all the attributes of the 2nd Model with the addition of a forearm. Breech block is not hinged in the center and the frame is without the guide screw of the 4th model. Mounted with uncheckered straight grain American walnut with tapered rnd forearm secured with a spring retained band and straight stock with carbine buttplate. Stock has the outline of a cartouche on the left side. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms only 1,500 of these carbines were produced in 1862. Given the ongoing Civil War and the Union Army’s desperate need for firearms there can be little doubt that this carbine saw extended action throughout the remainder of the war. CONDITION: Good to very good. No orig finish remains with bbl being mostly a smooth chocolate brown patina with a bare spot on the top just above the forend, probably from hanging in a saddle boot. Receiver is mostly a cleaned gray metal patina with dark brown patina at the front & rear edges. Breech block, lever, lockplate & hammer retain a dark attic patina. Lever latch retains fire blue on the sides. Buttstock is missing the swivel from the bottom side and forearm has a hairline back of the screw escutcheon, otherwise wood is sound with light nicks, dings & scratches and retains most of an old revarnish. Mechanics are fine, strong bright bore with scattered pitting. 4-40995 JR358 (1,500-2,500)
