SCARCE SPRINGFIELD ALTERED SPENCER 2-BAND RIFLE. SN 25159. Cal. 50 RF. Beautiful Springfield rifle with 32-1/2″ rnd bbl, three lands & grooves, square base front sight and bayonet lug with 900 yard ladder musket rear sight. Receiver is color case hardened and has the model number and Burnside markings on top of receiver. It is mounted with very nicely figured, uncheckered American walnut with full length forend, two bands and a slotted head ramrod. Bands have spring keepers with the upper band having a sling loop and corresponding loop in the buttstock. Left side of wrist has a crisp “ESA” (Erskine S. Allin) cartouche. Various parts have small inspector initials and receiver is fitted with the Stabler cut-off in front of trigger. Left side of the receiver and wrist of the stock are fitted with a sling bar & ring. Screws are all fire blued. According to Flayderman’s Guide to Antique American Firearms only 1,215 of these alterations were made at Springfield in the period 1867-74. CONDITION: Extremely fine, all matching. Bbl retains about 95% strong orig blue with flaking over the top rear portion. Rear sight retains most of its bright orig blue. Frame, lever & lockplate retain most of their orig case colors, strong & bright in sheltered areas, moderately faded on the sides. Lockplate retains dark case colors with stronger case colors on the hammer. Stock has a hairline back of lockplate with a few minor scratches and a couple of small bruises, otherwise wood is sound and retains about all of its bright orig arsenal finish with crisp cartouche. Mechanics are crisp, brilliant shiny bore. 4-40898 (5,000-8,000)
