SHARPS MODEL 1855 SADDLE RING CARBINE. SN 18265. Cal. 54. Standard U.S. carbine with 21″ rnd bbl, brass front sight and long leaf ladder rear sight. Left side of bbl over chamber area has a tiny “U.S.” and the inspector initials “J.H” and a tiny “P” proof along with a small “H” proof on the left side flat. Top tang has standard markings with the Maynard tape primer on right side of frame with standard markings on the primer door. Mounted with uncheckered straight grain American walnut with brass band & buttplate and a 2-pc brass patchbox in right side of buttstock. Left side of wrist, under sling bar, has the outline of two cartouches. Left side of receiver & stock are mounted with a sling bar & ring. Breech block has the early style platinum ring gas seal. According to the book Sharps Firearms, Sellers, only 600 of these carbines were produced for the Army and 101 for the Navy with most of the remainder of the production going to British contracts. Total production including 95 civilian carbines was 6,796. CONDITION: Good. No orig finish remains with the iron being mostly a silver/gray patina with a few small scattered spots of light pitting. Brass is a cleaned yellow brass color. Comb of the buttstock is missing an old sliver at the buttplate and there are a couple of gouges in forearm, otherwise wood is sound with a hand worn patina. Mechanics are crisp, strong bore with a few spots of pitting. 4-40456 JR370 (5,000-7,500)
