RARE SHARPS MODEL 1855 NAVY MILITARY RIFLE. SN 20404. Cal. 54. Very rare rifle with only 201 produced for the Navy in the period Oct. 1856 to Dec. 1858. It has a 27-1/2″ rnd bbl, German silver front sight and a musket style rear sight with ramp to 400 yds and ladder to 800 yds. Bottom of bbl at muzzle is equipped with a saber bayonet lug. Top of bbl, top tang and Maynard tape primer device cover have standard markings. Top of bbl is also stamped with a small anchor. Mounted with nicely figured uncheckered American walnut with straight stock & brass carbine buttplate. It has a brass bbl band around forearm and a 2-pc brass patchbox in right side of buttstock. These rifles are rarely encountered today and are usually in very poor condition. CONDITION: Good. No orig finish remains with the bbl being a smooth brown artificially aged patina with a couple of spots of pitting. Receiver, lockplate, lever & hammer are a mottled silver/brown patina with scattered light pitting and touch up on the top tang and rear portion of the top of the receiver. Brass is a medium yellow mustard patina. Toe has a large repair and a hairline in forearm back of the screw escutcheon, otherwise wood is sound showing moderate to heavy wear and retains a restored finish. Mechanics are fine, bright shiny bore with a few scattered spots of light pitting. 4-40129 JR371 (13,000-18,000)
