NORTH CAROLINA SURCHARGED CONFEDERATE CONVERSION MUSKET. Cal. 69, NSN. This gun started life as an 1816 flint musket with a 42″ bbl and three bands, it is now 31″ with two bands and a Confederate braised bolster conversion to percussion. The lock is marked “L. POMEROY” and both bbl and lock are US inspected and dated “1825”. The N. Carolina surcharge is light but discernible, stamped on top of bbl. Since this gun was originally US inspected, the state of North Carolina must have bought it surplus and it was later converted to percussion for Confederate service and possibly the veteran took it home, cut it down further to its present configuration and used it as a Fowler. This gun is in very good condition with good markings and good patina overall. CONDITION: Iron surfaces are gray/brown with scattered staining and light pitting esp at muzzle and around breech. Markings in bbl and lock are all discernible though the “N CAROLINA” surcharge is weak as can be seen in photographs. Ram rod is a replacement 4-40459 JS (2,500-4,500)
